About Denise

Based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Arbor Educational and Clinical Consulting (est. 2006) is under the direction of Denise Buote, B.A., B.Ed. (U.B.C.), M.A. (U of Chicago) and Ph.D. (U.B.C).

In B.C., Denise has worked in the public school system as a teacher in French Immersion, a general elementary classroom, a learning resource centre, and a school district program for children with learning, emotional and behavioral challenges. She has also worked as a social worker for the Ministry for Children and Family Development. 

In the US, Denise worked as a special education teacher, milieu therapist, and individual therapist in a long-term residential treatment centre for children and adolescents who suffer from significant mental health issues due to trauma and neglect. In addition, she worked as an individual therapist in an outpatient child and adolescent psychiatry unit at a large urban hospital. In Vancouver, she has a small private practice working with children, youth, and families.

Denise has been an undergraduate and graduate lecturer in the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia (focus on child and youth development and special education) and was Acting Research Director in the UBC Faculty of Medicine’s Division for Continuing Professional Development and Knowledge Translation during 2007-2008. She has an extensive research and evaluation background specializing in various aspects of child and youth development, and adult education, mental health, health promotion, and well-being.

She has provided numerous workshops and intensive training sessions in Canada and abroad for schools and community organizations in the areas of youth development, educational practices, and evaluation. These workshops and intensive training opportunities are created to meet the educational goals of organizations.

Memberships include the Ministry of Education (certified teacher), the Canadian Evaluation Society (credentialed evaluator), and the American Evaluation Association.
